This ‘katar’ has a double grip with other handles a slightly convex to the hand. The hilt is covered with gold inlay of scrolling creepers and floral lattice. The hilt also has gold inlay inscriptions along its sides and insides. The scabbard comprised of a piece of velvet stretched over thin wooden interiors. A ‘katar’ such as this, is known as ‘punch’ or push daggers. It is characterised by its ‘H’ shaped design with a horizontal hand grip. It originated in Tamil Nadu and the earliest form was used in the medieval kingdom of Vijayanagara. As the weapon spread throughout India, it became a status symbol. Rajput and Mughal princes were often portrayed wearing a ‘katar’ at their side.
