Zoological specimens at the Raffles Library and Museum

The display of various animal mounts marked the impressive zoological section at the Raffles Library and Museum, which contained a striking array of specimens that ranged from stuffed and skeletonised seladang (wild oxen), rhinoceros, wild boar and deer to birds, reptiles, amphibians and aquatic mammals such as dolphins and tortoises. Of particular interest was the skeleton of the whale, which was seen for the first time in 1907 although it had been acquired 15 years ago. Suspended by steel ropes from the ceiling, the mounted whale made a remarkable exhibit. Apart from animals, the museum's extensive collections also included botany, geology, ethnology and numismatics.
