This is a short, undated letter from Sir Stamford Raffles to William Marsden, the distinguished scholar and former East India Company administrator in Sumatra. Marsden was well known for his ‘History of Sumatra’, published in 1783, as well as his other work, a dictionary and grammar of the Malay language published in 1812. In the letter, Raffles informs Marsden that he is sending him a Dutch map of Sumatra as well as a sketch of its southern coast with native place names.The map and sketch are no longer extant.
