This embroidered panel is possibly a handkerchief. It is made from a red silk fabric, which is considered an auspicious colour associated with weddings in the Chinese culture. The four corners of the piece are decorated with a similar motif a deep blue peony spray surrounded with smaller flowers in different colours such as yellow and cream. Peonies are auspicious symbols that represent spring, love, beauty and good fortune. Following the edges of the piece are 3 distinct borders of different decorative motifs. The innermost border pattern is made up of flowers of contrasting colours alternating with trailing green leaves. This is followed by a colourful border pattern of geometric shapes in brown, purple, beige, red and orange. The outermost border is filled with triangles of different colours. There is also a fringe of lace embroidery surrounding the fabric. The motifs are stitched using silk threads which allows for a range of tones to be created. Due to the auspicious decorative motifs, this handkerchief could be part of the bridal trousseau prepared for the groom and his family. Other accessories sewn by the bride herself included small purses and belts.
