Basket

A variety of storage baskets made from woven bamboo and rattan such as this, are still used by highland communities like the Akha, Lahu and Lisu in northern Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia today. This type of basket is usually used for heavy loads of firewood and food. It is carried on the back with straps across the top of the head. The Akha, Lisu and Lahu are ethnic minority groups in northern Thailand who migrated from neighbouring regions during the 18th and 19th centuries. The terms 'highlanders', 'hilltribes' or 'chao khao' ('mountain people') as they are referred to in Thai, are no longer accurate as many also now live in lowland regions.
