Skull cap

This skull-cap is usually attached under a large hat called sa'ong, to keep it in place when it is worn. Designed with colourful geometric designs, it is made of plaited bamboo strands. This type of skull cap is used by the sea Dayak of the Kalaka River. This piece belongs to a selection of fibre work bought from Archdeacon Arthur Frederick Sharp (1866–1960), an influential Anglican missionary in Southeast Asia in 1903. As the Archdeacon of St. Thomas’ Cathedral in Sarawak, he was often given gifts in gratitude from the local community.
