Hearse lining

Peranakan Chinese in Singapore used embroidery pieces like this example during the funeral of an elder. Such pieces were made in China to the tastes of the Peranakan community in Singapore, which favoured the same motifs that were used on wedding embroidery. The key difference was the colours used – indigo blue, green and purple, which together with black, white and silver, were the colours associated with death and mourning in a traditional Peranakan family. Funerary pieces are very rare as most Peranakan families do not purchase them but instead rented them from funeral parlours or undertakers.
