Sampans at Collyer Quay

Collyer Quay was named after the sea wall that was designed by George Chancellor Collyer of the Madras Engineers and completed in 1864 as a form of defence for Singapore. Before the development was carried out, only the sheds and outhouses had faced the seashore while the buildings were facing Commercial Square. However, by the late 1860s, new buildings had been built lining the quay.
