Sylvia Koh was a prominent bridal couturier in Singapore from the 1950s to 1990s. She designed and custom wedding gowns which are characterised by elaborate laces imported from Europe. During those years, she offered a one-stop bridal service.As a child, she learnt sewing from her mother and by the age of nine, she could design, cut pattern and sew. During World War II, she left Singapore for Jakarta and got married in Indonesia. There she enrolled herself into a Dutch school that was famous for teaching all kinds of craft making. It was there and then that her dressmaking skills took a leap and she learnt how to make wedding gowns. In 1947, she returned to Singapore and established her bridal salon.She travelled extensively to France and USA to learn how wedding gowns were designed in other countries. She also became one of the greatest buyers of wedding gown laces in France. She had four boutiques in Singapore. She retired about ten years ago after she broke her leg.
