Singapore’s exotic street life and architecture were commonly depicted in picture postcards. Its street hawkers, shophouses, temples and rickshaw-pullers were especially popular. The rickshaw-puller in particular was a popular subject of photography and constituted one of the objects of curiosity for Western tourists unaccustomed to this manual mode of transport.
