Coconut tree plantations were numerous in Malaya as it yielded quite a profit and thus became a major source of employment for migrants hoping to earn a living in the settlement. Coconut shells made good charcoal while the flesh of the coconut, when dried, became copra. Oil extracted from the copra was used to manufacture items such as soap, shampoo, candles and many other products. This photograph is part of a set of photographs which belonged to a European who served in the Medical Corps in Singapore and then in Hong Kong.
