Established in 1904 along Bras Basah Road by the Scotsman Tom Sergeant, the Caledonia Hotel was a European-style hotel managed by T.M. Connolly. Claiming to be the only British hotel in Singapore at the time, the establishment had all the modern amenities expected by well-travelled guests, including an American bar, billiard room, lounge area and rooms with attached bathrooms. The hotel was in existence for a relatively short time, probably ceasing operations sometime in the 1910s. It was renamed the Oriental Hotel after its owner decided to venture into other business activities. The site where the hotel once stood is now occupied by the Carlton Hotel.
