This photograph, taken by G.R. Lambert & Co., depicts a typical street within Chinatown. Sir Stamford Raffles had proposed the concept of a Chinese town in order to establish an organised system of settlement for the influx of Chinese immigrants to Singapore. However, the different streets within Chinatown were occupied by immigrants from the different provinces of China. Raffles had not only divided Singapore by ethnic enclaves;. in Chinatown itself, the Chinese immigrants were segregated according to province and class as perceived by the British.
