A leading department store during the early 20th century, Whiteaway Laidlaw took over this space at Battery Road in 1910 after Flint's Building was destroyed by fire on the same site. Next to it was a building that hosted a number of tenants during the 20th century, including the Chartered Bank, the Bank of Taiwan and the Bank of China.
