The Russo-Japanese War was most significant for the fact that it marked the first victory of a fledgling Asian power against a European nation, which was then deemed superior by default. The costly victory won the Japanese a greater sphere of influence over the region seen in this map, including the Korean peninsula and Southern Manchuria, where the major theatres of operation took place.
