The success of Pontianak by Keris Film Productions sparked a race between the major film studios to produce more of such films. MFP released Hantu Jerangkung (‘Skeletal ghost’) in 1957; Anak Pontianak (‘Son of the vampire’) and Hantu Kubur (‘Spirit of the grave’) the following year. Cathay–Keris released four Pontianak sequels between 1957 and 1964. Both studios also made three films in 1958 based on another well-known horror figure, Orang Minyak (‘The oily man’).
