Situated along Keppel Road, the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station was officially opened in 1933 to serve as the terminus for the West Coast railway line now run by the Malaysian train operator KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu). Four pillars stand at the entrance to the station, each carved with motifs representing one of the four economic pillars of Malaya: Agriculture, Commerce, Transport and Industry. Other notable architectural features include a large dome over the lobby and mosaic paneling along the walls that depict scenes from Malayan economic life. Among the station’s facilities was a Station Hotel, one of three found along the railway network, which was established mainly for passenger usage. In 2010, an agreement was reached between the Malaysian and Singapore governments to relocate the railway and checkpoint operations to a new station in Woodlands while preserving the old station for future redevelopment.
