This folded book or parabaik has 48 sides illustrated with coloured pigments that depict religious and festive occasions such as donations to temples, the refurbishment of Buddha images and the initiation of novice monks. These images are interesting for the wealth of information they contain about 19th century architecture, rituals, musical instruments and costumes used in dance, and other aspects of Burmese material culture. The use of shading, perspective and a horizon was probably the result of European influence in the mid 19th century. The earliest parabaik are dated mid 18th century and most of them are from Mandalay. This book may have been commissioned for the ordination of a princely novice monk.
