These ornate wooden panels were found in Terengganu, on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula but are carved in the style of the northeast coast of Java, and most likely came from the famous woodcarving centre of Jepara. Their presence in Terengganu is testament to the early origins of Javanese trade in wooden furnishings and carvings. Such carved panels typically graced doorways and walls, adding a decorative touch in homes and other structures. The high-quality of these carvings suggests that they would have originally graced the home of a wealthy family.
