Literally the Lord of the Wall and Moat, the City God is responsible for the peace and prosperity of his territory, like a county magistrate, with whom he cooperates to perform common duties. His area of jurisdiction is not confined to this world but also that of the underworld. In the latter, he functions as a judge, meting out justice to sinners and banishing evil with the assistance of his guardian generals, the Black and White Faces of Impermanence (Heibai Wuchang 黑白无长).
