This is an ornate silver bangle, with floral motifs, studded with Borneo diamonds. This bangle also reflects a certain Chinese influence in design and in the wire filigree technique. This was probably due to the fact that Palembang is home to a sizable Peranakan Chinese community. Jewellery has many different functions in island Southeast Asia, for example it was used to indicate social positions, to symbolise the importance of the social relationship between the giver and the receiver during gift exchanges, and to serve as miniature religious objects.
