Yaksha-figure rattle

This terracotta figure is probably from the Shunga period (4th-2nd centuries BCE). This one is of a pot-bellied man squatting. Made as a rattle, it was created with a double mould technique, joined together with a hollow centre. A few pebbles were placed in the centre for the rattle and the hole was sealed up. The back of this yaksha is plain suggesting that it was to be seen from the front only. Very fine clay in red, beige or ochre colour is used for this terracotta. Jewellery was added later.
