Armchair

This rectangular-back armchair belongs to a set that includes a similar armchair and a tea table (see 1999-02651-003). It has no projecting crest rail or handgrips, but has a spat at the back. Both the chairs and the table are made of blackwood. The main hall of a traditional household features the largest amount of furniture. A set of chairs with a tea table forms the most common group. Fujian furniture flourished in the 19th century. The styles and designs of 19th century Fujian furniture were largely adopted from classical examples of earlier ages, but variations exist that reflect the individual tastes of furniture designers.
