This hand-painted cotton cloth painting is known as Pichhavai, a traditional large size cloth paintings from Nathadwara that often depicts a scene with many figures in a tabloid style. Usually Krishna is in the centre surrounded by cowherd girls (gopi). They usually depict various festivals related to Krishna. These paintings are hung for special darshana (blessings) behind the icon of Lord Krishna inside the temples. Even today, many traditional Shrinathji painters are engaged in painting Pichhavais such as this because of the huge demand. Nathadwar, where this style of painting became popular, is a small town in Rajasthan, renowned for its Krishna temple called the Shrinathji.
