This pedestal tray betel set is known as a puan sireh. The tray is cast brass with floral designs around the bowl and base. The upper and lower rims of the tray are clad in silver strips. The upper strip bears the state seal of Kedah which suggests that this set was a presentation gift for a high ranking dignitary. Chewing sireh was often a highly ritualized social custom especially in the Southeast Asian courts. It was usually presented in a special set such as this one containing all the necessary ingredients for chewing sireh. Sireh is mildly narcotic and has a calming effect.
