Such plain buttons were traditionally worn by Peranakan men. Buttons worn by Peranakan men tended to be simple in design, and were usually made of silver, bakelite, ivory, amber and bone. American and European coins were also adopted to become buttons for men. In contrast, buttons worn by Peranakan women were more ornamented and were decorated with filigree gold, gilt silver and diamonds.
