Qi Baishi's (1864-1957) style defies categorisation. His style stood out for its strong connection with folk art. His compositions are usually simple and possess a strong graphic quality. Besides flowers and still life, Qi also painted landscapes and many small creatures such as frogs, rats and insects. Qi's impoverished and humble beginnings allowed him to identify with the seemingly weak and small. Painting shrimps is considered one of Qi's fortes. Here, layered monochromes show his mastery of ink application. Shapes and lines are clearly defined as seen in the shrimps' bodies and feelers.
