Chettiar document

This document is issued by a Chettiar moneylender in Singapore dated 1941. Chettiars were a traditional moneylending caste who arrived in Singapore in the 19th century from South India, often bringing with them large sums of money. This document is part of the museum's collection issued by Chettiar moneylenders that include promissory slips, indentures and a law verdict. Market Street near the Singapore River was where most Chettiars conducted their business. Chettiar moneylenders were important to many small businesses and ordinary people as alternatives to the large European and Chinese banks, which had far more stringent loan policies.
