This ogival repoussé ‘pending’ (belt buckle) has a beautiful flower motif and comes with a strap made up of panels elaborately decorated with foliage designs. Various metalwork techniques such as repoussé —in which designs are hammered into sheet metal—engraving and chasing were used to fashion the piece. It was probably worn on ceremonial occasions, as those for daily use were simple and relatively unadorned. It has been suggested that such belts with panels belonged to a later period, whereas earlier ceremonial belts were made with many interlocking links and rings.
