This box is covered with a heavy inlay of silver inscriptions as well as floral motifs. The interior of the box is beautifully inlaid with wood and mother-of-pearl. The box is made in a style similar to metalwork from the 14th-15th centuries when Egypt was under the rule of the Mamluk sultans. As such, pieces made in this style are known as ‘Mamluk revival’. This box is a copy of a box that would have been used during the Mamluk period for storing the 30 sections of the Qur’an.
