This pair of bed hangings, in the shape of neckties, is ornately designed with floral and phoenixes motifs, as well as beadwork. It was part of the ensemble of auspicious symbols which decorated the Peranakan wedding bed. Rich fertility symbols reflected the hope for many heirs to the family name, as wedding beds were important as places of conception for the next generation of the family. Wedding beds were one of the largest pieces of furniture in wealthy Peranakan families, and could be part of the wedding trousseau.
