This rectangular-back blackwood armchair has namwood backsplats and a woven split rattan matted seat. Despite the predominant angularity of the lines, the design does not suggest any stiffness. The main hall of a traditional Chinese household features the largest amount of furniture. A set of chairs such as this example with a tea table would form the most common group. Fujian furniture flourished in the 19th century. The styles and designs of 19th century Fujian furniture were largely adopted from classical examples of earlier ages, but variations exist that reflect the individual tastes of furniture designers.
