This pair of three tiered ornament has its exterior decorated with fine diagonally incised grooves, achieved by chasing. This ornament could have been used as an ear ornament. However, it has been suggested that such round band ornaments with a gap in the loop were perhaps not ear ornaments, but cord clips used to hold cords together around the waist, or placed in conical coiffures as depicted on statues. This ornament belongs to the period of 7th to 10th centuries in Java, which saw a profusion of jewellery forms.
