This woman's tunic is made from black indigo-dyed woven cotton, with appliqué bands sewn along the edges. It is part of a set of garments worn by the Ede, an Austronesian-speaking group who live in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The garments also include a wrap-around skirt and a rare headcloth. The Ede (also known as Rade) live in Vietnam's highland provinces of Dak Lak, southern Gia Lai, and western parts of Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen. The Ede language belongs to the Malay-Polynesian group.
