Song Xiang was a native of Guangdong and was known by several names such as Pengzhi, Huanxiang and Zhiwan. He was a scholar who had attained the 'jinshi' degree, which refers to the ancient art of inscription scripting on bronze vessels and stone steles. Jinshi enthusiasts often combined epigraphy in their calligrapy, seal carving, and painting. Song Xiang was known for his poetry and calligraphy. A rhythmic flow is generated through Song Xiang’s confident handling of the brush. The twists and turns of the brush and the modulation of the lines imbue the piece of calligraphy with a lot of movement and energy. The abstract beauty of this work can be easily appreciated by those uninitiated to Chinese calligraphy.
