Bangles

This is one of three [pairs os bronze bangles that were found at grave sites. The small bell-like knobs are an example of how advanced casting technology during this period was able to produce small intricate items in addition to the larger oil lamps, drums and axe blades. The Bronze Age of Southeast Asia was largely dominated by the Dong Son culture of North Vietnam. The Dong Son community was an agricultural one based on wet rice cultivation. Social stratification was evident, as there was a marked difference in the burial items of some compared to the general population. Bronzes in particular were precious and rare objects and were symbols of wealth and power, only to be found in certain graves. It still remains unclear if early bronze-casting techniques were introduced directly from China, or evolved independently in Southeast Asia.
