Xu Beihong is considered the first Chinese artist to have successfully integrated Chinese painting and Western academic realism. White is not a colour that is traditionally employed in the palette of Chinese paintings. In this painting, however, Xu Beihong has realistically depicted the geese's feathered body in white colour, accurately portraying nature by adhering to the principles of Western realism while combining with the Chinese medium.
