Qi Baishi's (1864-1957) style defies categorisation. His style stood out for its strong connection with folk art. His compositions are usually simple and possess a strong graphic quality. Besides flowers and still life, Qi also painted landscapes and many small creatures such as prawns, frogs, rats and insects. Qi's impoverished and humble beginnings allowed him to identify with the seemingly weak and small. This work is an example of Qi's love for small creature - a bold composition created with vigourous strokes. This piece was painted towards the end of his life, at the age of 92.
