Born in 1954 in Singapore, Ng Yak Hwee is a graduate of Singapore’s former Nanyang University (Botany major). An accomplished painter and sculptor, Ng received the 1987 Silver Medal from the Salon des Artistes Français, and won First Prize (Figurative category) in the 1992 UOB Painting of the Year Competition.Executed after the exhibition but stylistically and thematically similar to the paintings of Goh’s third solo show “Being with Nature”, ‘Autumn Mist’ and ‘Poem's Rock’ depict Goh’s familiar expressive bold strokes, abstract forms and subtly layered colours used to represent (real and imagined) scenes from nature. These works cap Goh’s evolving style during a decade of voluminous output and artistic development, in which the artist became primarily known as a landscape painter, but one who had gradually shifted into producing abstract paintings without any representational references by the late 1980s.
