The Bridge

Born in 1948 in Singapore, Poh Siew Wah is a self-taught painter and lifelong art teacher. A recipient of several awards, including the Tan Tze Chor Art Award (1987) and a Merit Award, IBM Award (1990), Poh is known for his diverse styles ranging from representational watercolours to abstract paintings.As a child Poh was encouraged by his commercial artist father to drawn and paint, and he exhibited for the first time at the age of fifteen with the Singapore Art Society. Poh’s basic formal art training was obtained during his secondary school years and furthered while majoring in art education at the Teachers’ Training College. From the 1970s onwards he exhibited regularly in local and overseas exhibitions. His early work typically featured scenes from Singapore, with the emphasis gradually shifting away from an impressionistic rendering of light to simplified outlined forms as can be seen in this painting.
