Born in 1965 in Cilacap, Central Java, Nasirun graduated from Institut Seni Indonesia, Yogyakarta in 1994. He has held two solo exhibitions and participated in more than 15 exhibitions in Singapore and Indonesia. His style has undergone subtle but noticeable change. His early works suggest the influence of Hendra Gunawan in the translucency of colour, the broad calligraphic sweeps of brushwork, his mannerism and stylization of human figures, and degrees of tendencies towards vibrant psychedelic hues. Nasirun’s work reflects a belief in Javanese Islamic-mystic cosmology which underpins his paintings with a kind of metaphysical-social morality.
