Basket

This basket made of bamboo, palm and rattan has a round rim and square base with pointed corners. Decorative pattern include a black and natural checker lattice design on the exterior while the middle has curled open work decoration. The rich tropical forests of Borneo provide a vast arrary of creepers, vines, grass, leaves and barks to model a wide variety and style of Dayak basketry. This basket belongs to a selection of fibre work bought from Archdeacon Arthur Frederick Sharp (1866–1960), an influential Anglican missionary in Southeast Asia in 1903. As the Archdeacon of St. Thomas’ Cathedral in Sarawak, he was often given gifts in gratitude from the local community.
