David Marshall took to election campaigning like a natural. In his 1955 election manifesto, he denounced colonialism as exploitation and promised dynamic socialism to the masses. His election strategy was to use the election to educate a previously apathetic electorate . The English press fervently attacked him, so he decided to play on the publicity by making provocative speeches opposite the Singapore Cricket Club. Marshall could mesmerise a crowd with his oratorical charm. His commanding, authoritative tone and use of rhetoric gained him massive support.
