Struggle for Life

Born in Hanoi, Tran Luong (b.1960) graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1983. Together with Ha Tri Hieu, Pham Quang Vinh, Hong Viet Dung and Dang Xuan Hoa, they are collectively known as the Hanoi ‘Gang of Five’. Luong’s inspiration stems from his childhood staying in the countryside. After his residency in New York in 1996, Luong decided to venture into the field of installation and performance art, as a refusal to be commercialized. Now, Luong travels extensively, participating in international workshops and exchanges, obtaining support for his curatorial projects.A representative piece from the Underwater series, Luong fills the work with surreal creatures drawn from his imagination. Appreciative of nature, this work is a depiction of his observance of nature, especially the primordial force of the sea and the struggle for survival of the sea creatures.
