This is a ceramic jelly mould possibly used to make agar agar, which is a gelatinous substance commonly served as a dessert in, but not exclusive to Peranakan cuisine. This piece has the shape of a cow imprinted on it. Kuehs are an integral part of traditional Peranakan cuisine, and there are many recipes for different kuehs. They were served as desserts, some specially catered for festive and celebratory occasions like New Year or birthdays. Kueh moulds were usually made of wood or metal and were a common sight in Peranakan kitchens in the early twentieth century. Peranakans also started using European-inspired ceramic jelly moulds in the shape of animals, in the early 20th century.
