Born in Bandung in 1958, Tisna Sanjaya studied graphic art at the Department of Fine Arts and Design in the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and then at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, in Braunschweig, Germany. Sanjaya is one of the few artists in Indonesia who works in the printmaking technique of etching.“Longser”, completed in 1994, is an etching in which Sanjaya invokes the imagery of the theatre. The intrinsically-designed border that filled with motifs resembles a traditional wayang stage. Two figures can be seen on the centrestage. The tall and slim character looks away, feeling dejected, while the short and fat character tosses a coin in the air, smiling sinisterly and invoking a feeling of disgust.
