Born in 1978 in the Philippines, Nona Garcia graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. In 2000, she was both a recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and a winner of the Jurors’ Choice of the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Award. In ‘Fall Leaves After Leaves Fall’, a crash becomes the site of a formal and conceptual exercise for the moment of the collision. Aestheticized in monochromatic greys and blacks, it is thus imbued with an uncanny beauty that is derived from Garcia’s hyperrealist mode of painting. Visually and conceptually, the work turns upon the notion of mirroring – as a result, the car simultaneously becomes the cause and consequence of its own collision.
