This calligraphic panel has two lines of openwork 'nasta’liq' script in a background of floral scrolls with birds. The cream paper découpé (stencilled work) laid down on light red paper, is signed in one corner as ‘Abd al-Husayn and dated ‘309’. This piece is an excellent example of the ingenuity and skilled work of calligraphers who extended their artistry beyond merely the written word on paper.
