This is a rare Indonesian Peranakan Chinese wine ewer. Wine ewers were often intricately decorated with auspicious motifs for the wedding. This one features Chinese motifs in repoussé work on the body. Wine ewers were often used in offering ceremonies but rarely during Peranakan wedding rites. Most wine ewers were made of silver, although it was not uncommon for Peranakan families to gild them before they were used in the wedding rites.
