Born in 1913, the late Lee Cheng Yong studied art at the Sin Hua Art Academy of Shanghai. He was the president of the Penang Chinese Art Club, formed in 1936 as one of the first pre-war art societies. His subjects were varied, including portraiture, landscapes, still-life, as well as semi-abstract works. While he was mostly noted for his oil paintings, he also worked in other media like pencil, watercolour, gouache, oil pastels and sculpture.
